I suspect those who read my blog are familiar with South Beach Steve's "Log My Loss" blog. Those that don't, I invite you to check out his Word of the Day posts. I voted for Steve to be included on "Good Mood Gig". I invite you to do the same.

Have a nice day.

Belated One Year Anniversary

I'm not sure how I let it pass. I started my weight loss journey September 20th 2008. One year of dieting just past. Down 60kg and up 24kg in one year and still trying.

I am not particularly good at Batto Jutsu, a Japanese sword art. My Sensei told me that I must think about it as a journey to the top of a mountain. There is no one path to the top. On the journey you must learn to choose between paths that matches your ability. Ability is not in your arms and legs but in your head.

After one year of dieting, blogging and reading I think I have come to a realization that to be successful at dieting one must choose a diet (path) that matches their personality.

I lost 60kg in Okinawa and gained 24 kg traveling in North America. I now realize you must choose a diet (life style) that matches your personality and your immediate environment.

Dieting is not static.

Health Check = Longer life

The idegenous people of Okinawa tend to have one of the longest life expectancies of any group of people in the world. The Okinawa diet essentially reflects the general eating patterns of the Okinawan seniors.

In one study, Okinawan seniors were found to have 80% fewer cases of heart disease and 50% less cases of cancer than their American counterparts. There are more people over the age of 100 per 100,000 population than any place in the world.

The Okinawa diet is not a magic diet. There are no secrets. It is simply, a way of life. Researchers have been careful to note, it is not just about nutrition. Okinawans tend to be more physically active, doing what I call "just living". Like Islanders all over the world, Okinawans tend to be laid back and operate on a what is referred to as Unchina Time (Island Time). Okinawans tend to be fairly spiritual. Okinawan society is made up of many loosely defined social circles. Within the circle, people sincerely care and make an effort to support one another. Of course, all of this contributes to their well being.

Going through the mail I thought about one additional thing that contributes to the longevity of the Okinawans. The government makes a sincere effort to care for her citizens. Below is a request I received in the mail from my municipal government.

Essentially, it is a request to make an appointment to come for a yearly Cancer and Medical Health Check. On a computer in the Municipal Office I am on a data base organized by age. A ticket is sent out once a year to come for the appropriate age related health check. I choose Sunday afternoon for my health check. This Sunday my son will go for his health check. My son's health check and shots are all free. I believe I have to pay about 1000yen (10usd).

Last year I was too large to fit in the x-ray machine. It was an awkward moment for everyone. Possibly more awkward for the doctor and nurses, as they apologized profusely. I am looking forward to getting into the machine this year.

The purpose of the post is to point out the longevity of the Okinawan seniors, in a small way, is the result of a very caring government. They make a proactive attempt to provided health checks at almost zero costs to their citizens. Does your government, not only provide free, age appropriate health checks every year but take the effort to notify you by mail and allow you to come in on the weekend? It seems very civilized.

Have a nice day.

Random Thoughts & Update

Cycles.

My livelihood is dependent on business & economic cycles. Specifically, the currency changes between the Yen and US, Cnd. and Aus. Dollars. I think about cycles everyday. There is no "understanding" them - just being aware, developing a feel and learning to guess.

The farmer and rancher are intuitively aware of season changes and weather patterns. Depending on the size of the outfit, commodity prices in Chicago, Winnipeg, Kansas and maybe Osaka and Zhengzhou are checked daily.

Since moving close to the ocean I have become familiar with tide and current cycles. Something the fisherman knows intuitively. I have even studied the phases of the moon as they have an influence on the traditional festivals here in Okinawa. Earlier sea travel and commerce were all dependent on obvious cycles to the people living during those times. Today, I think most people are ignorant of the cycles around them.

My goal is to lose weight. Checking and recording my weight every morning seems natural. I have noticed a number of cycles and cycles inside cycles. While calories intake and exercise remain constant I notice my weight will stay the same for 2-6 days and then drop quickly over 1-3 days. Exercising more and/or eating less does not really effect this cycle.

That said, I need to lose 5 kg to reach my goal. Based on my reading of my weight loss cycles I should finish my diet at 87kg. I will of course work hard to hit 85kg. Though, hitting 85kg is not important as long as I know I tried my best, up to the last minute.

Have a nice day.

Update.

I really don't think the experts really know exactly what is going on when you try to lose weight. Each person seems to have different experiences. What works for some, doesn't for others. Some people lose weight quickly, some slowly. None of it matters as long as one tries. Though, considered a wayward Catholic, I still have respect for the "Mysteries". There seems to be a lot of mystery in the weight loss game. We just need to believe we are doing the right thing and simply try.

Again, have a nice day.

My 3 month Okinawa diet is almost over. I am in the process figuring out how to move on to the next step. I just read a great article at Lyle McDonald's Body Recompostion site call the Full Diet Break. If interested you can read it here.

Today at the 100 yen shop (dollar store) I walked by these measuring spoons and something clicked in my head. Immediately, I threw them in my basket.

Without being anally retentive, I measure, weigh and look up the caloric value of everything I consume. I was under the impression that the soup spoon on the right was equal to 1 tablespoon (15ml). I just learned it is a little less than half a tablespoon.

This means I have been under reporting my caloric intake of olive oil by 50%. I would add one half or one soup spoon of oil to my most of my salads. Mentally noting, one soup spoon is 120 calories. Now I realize it was closer to 60 calories. I use a premium olive oil and look forward to doubling my portions.

I understand why some are critical of those who measure and reference everything they consume. I still believe every fat person (who wishes to lose weight) should do it for a bit. Doing so, has helped me clue into reality. Also, lying to yourself becomes impossible.

Last night I was fairly smashed.

But what a fun night. I drank around 15 beers and ended up at a little shop close to my house at 3am. Tomorrow being a holiday and the owner being a Prince, I was given a huge plate of sashimi at no charge. I added 3000 calories to yesterday's total.

The surprising thing is I did not gain any weight. I watched South Africa beat the Lions in a sports bar with some friends. I did well by resisting eating but broke down and had 1 beer which of course resulted in me drinking an additional dozen or so.

Anyways, today is a new day. My weight did not go up and I cleaned up on my wagers. I got to hang out with some people I have not seen a few years and made a new friend. All in all - a good night.

Back to the Diet Grind.

Random Thoughts

My apologies to those who are about to eat. I just wanted to post a picture of my blister that almost healed itself in one day. Of course, you would have taken my word for it but I thought a picture of my foot, in terrible condition, would help make my next point clear.

Exercising in the rain, day after day, sucks. Not socializing sucks. Not drinking beer sucks. Plainly, Dieting sucks. But, in the big picture it is all worth it.

Lots of people get blisters. No big deal. But, I am telling you "fat" people have to grind through a lot more than just blisters. Thankfully, I did not take a picture of the rash between my legs that bled on occasion, as I would have also posted it. I have heard other "fat" dieters have had nasty rashes on the inside of their arms.

My friend developed a terrible rash under her breasts. She was hospitalized, forced the hospital to give her a breast reduction, went on a liquid diet. Came out 12kg lighter and went on to lose another 3o kg. Finally, she "came out" and is happily living in Sydney with her very hot partner.

"Fat" people, who have lost weight already know all this, but intuitively never share it. Right or wrong, we understand people, outside our loved ones, probably feel we deserve it. Depending on your peer or social group, sharing stories of your swollen red bag would result in some humorous but unbearable ridicule. I love my friends but know they would never tire of heaping jokes on me. To quote my Welsh friend. "bloody punters."

I am writing this for the fat people who are just starting their diets. You may or may not experience some discomfort. If you do, who cares, fight through it. To my way of thinking, the fewer people you tell about your discomforts the stronger you become. The only reason my wife knows about my condition, she washed the blood from my socks and underwear.

Random Thoughts

My weight is down 1.4kg(3lbs) from yesterday and is now basically where it was 5 days ago.

Well it is prudent to think about and consider why it fluctuated, I don't believe finding "the" answer is important. My body did what it wanted to do - just trying to stay healthy. I stayed the course, things worked out.

Twice a week the nice Yakult lady delivers a special drink my wife loves and yogurt. My wife told her I was on a diet and she kindly gave her a sample of a diet yogurt that has just 45 calories. I had it for breakfast with half an Avocado and it was great.

I imagine a dietitian would cringe but I decided to try and reduce my calories to 1200 a day average for the next week and a half. That is a reduction of 20% from my current 1500 average. Considering my weight has dropped 25% from 127kg(280lbs) I don't feel it is a big deal.

I suspect the hunger pains before bed and my cranky moments will return. With time they went away after I dropped my daily calories from 4000 to 1500. I am prepared for the "fight".

Have a nice day.

Random Thoughts

My weight dropped 0.2kg to 97.6 It is still up 1.2kg from 2 days ago. Very curious.

My first thought it was a result of salt. Due to the forces to be, I had a large McD's French Fries yesterday so I was not able to cut my salt back as I planned.

Another thought was that I was dehydrated when I dropped to 96.4kg as I just came off two low calorie days of fruit and vegetables. Hard to believe, as I regularly drink 4 plus litres of liquid a day. I have also had a bowel movement every day - can't be that.

My new theory is my scale might need batteries. I know it is a stretch. But when I first weighed myself this morning I was 96.6. I went to get my camera and my son decided to play "trampoline" on the scale. He is a very curious boy. Next 10 times I got on the scale it read 97.6kg.

Anyways, no worries. It would like to know why but the answer is not that important. The most important thing is to keep grinding. By accepting the fact, diets suck and should not be "fun", is the only way (I) stay sane. A hat tip to those who can make their diet "fun". Silently, I mock your make-belief -world.

I will eliminate salt today. Get new batteries and somehow check the calibration of my scale. Bring my calories down to 1200. And, fit in 3 hours of exercise.

Random Thoughts

A very curious weigh-in this morning. My weight increased 1.4kg(3lbs) from yesterday. This has happened 4 times since I started my diet. I find these days very interesting. I made no changes to my diet. I had a bowel movement yesterday afternoon.

I believe it is just my body doing what it wants to do to keep things "good". These kind of days are interesting but more important probably very healthy. In my head, things don't add up but things do add up somewhere. I accept I will never probably understand nor is it important that I do. Shit in my life works like that sometimes.

I drank 4 litres of water and tea yesterday. What I am wondering about is the amount of salt I consumed. Miso is loaded in salt. The shiritaki noodles I ate are made with natural unrefined sea salt. (loaded in minerals). The sardines I ate are also packed in sea water. Topping off the salt frenzy, I drowned my firm tofu in soy sauce - loaded in salt.

I never add salt to my meals or while cooking and my blood pressure is 115/90. So I don't worry too much about it. I am wondering if salt has something to do with the increase in weight. If it does or doesn't it is not a big deal. Just keep on grinding it out.

Have a nice day

I walked to the grocery store this morning carrying my son in his NapSack. Round trip, it takes 1 hour. Since starting my diet I have chosen to walk as much as possible. Round trip; 20 minutes to the vegetable stand and movie rental shop, 30 minutes to the day care and butcher shop, and 1 hour to City Hall. I don't include any of this activity in my excercise log.

I notice a lot of old people out walking to the same places as I do, even the day care. By old people, I mean people north of 80 years old. Okinawans tend to have a very long life expectancy, one of the longest in the world.

Seniors tend to be very active. I see lots of older people playing croquet and walking in the park. But, it seems to be more than that. The older Okinawans seem to be more active - just living day to day.

The older generation seem to be more active than their counter part in the West. I think part of it has to do with urban planning and liberal zoning laws.

You can walk 15 minutes down the street from my house and see a bar, noodle shop, vegetable shop, fish shop, pork shop, grocery store, smoke shop, school, day care, a million dollar house, a run down house, a low income apartment, a park, a welding shop, autobody shop, a karate dojo, a kobudo dojo, a bank, a bakery, a cake shop, a church, a green house, and a chicken coupe. What you don't see are parking lots and parking zones along the side of the road.

This type of urban planning and liberal zoning would never fly in a western country. In my opinion, liberal zoning makes it not only possible but necessary, to be active - just living day to day.

I guess we are a product of our environment after all.

Good Night

I have been following Zeusmeatball's blog for about two months. Today he hit an incredible milestone,

"...I woke up this morning I went straight to the scale and well what do ya know, it said 334.4lbs and I know that I had a smile on my face."

"528 days ago I weighed 534 pounds and I can still remember how I felt on that day when I started down this path to better health, unsure that I would make it a week and decided to start a blog to stay accountable"

That is correct. The good man has lost 200 pounds. If you have time, visit him here and leave a congratulation message.

I know, I know, he has faded nail polish on his toes - don't let it stop you from reading his post.

Great Job Mr. Zuesmeatball.

I was in the area and decided to stop into my favorite Irish Bar just as it opened. The first time I've been in a Pub in over 2 months. I ordered an expensive fancy water and watched the staff get ready for another Friday night. I left just as the third customer entered.

I enjoyed the compliments from the girls as to my new shape. I started to chat with the only other customer in the Pub and learned that he also lost weight recently. He was having terrible heart burn and was convinced the culprit was Beer. So he switched to Awamori Sake. He claims this is the only thing he changed in his diet and lost 20kg(44lbs) in three months. Losing half a pound a day for 90 days is impressive. The guy was still pretty "big" and assuming he used to drink a lot of beer, there was no reason for me not to doubt him.

I am sharing this random thought for two reasons.

The first reason is because it reinforces my belief that no two dieters are the same. Some people lose weight quickly, some people do not. Who cares how fast or slow it comes off as long as you are eating healthy, are somewhat active and always trying.

The second reason, I would like to jam it down the throats of all the haters in the diet blog sphere who continue to goose step with the "experts" and claim losing anything more than 1-2lbs a week is unhealthy. What rubbish.

Sure it might be unhealthy for some. It might not be for others. You goose steppers keep perpetuating the myth that all diets have to follow some formula and all people are the same. What rubbish.

You goose steppers love low expectations and probably hate success. Your days are filled with comparing yourself to others. Being bashed by you was my biggest surprise on my journey, as a first time blogger.

I am not a doctor. I am not a nutritionist.

Sorry for closing my comments. It might look like I am a coward but I have trouble dealing with the negativity and dieting at the same time. Time for my family and dieting has to come first.

Good Night and Peace

Surfing the diet blogsphere during lunch I came across an excellent post via 4XLT. The title of the post, Seven Keys to a Successful Body Transformation by Chris Shugart can be found here at Testostorone Muscle. While I would normally avoid any website with such a name, I am very happy to have read Chris's article.

I am a big believer that to be successful at anything you should try and model your behavior after people who have succeeded. This is exactly what this article is about. When I have time I will revist this site. Again, the link is here.

Over 100kg my scale "rounds off" to the nearest whole number. Under 100 kilograms the scale measures to the closest 0.2kg (0.44lbs). For the purpose of this blog I will record my weight rounded off to the closet whole number with the attached picture showing the exact weight.

1 kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds. I can't work it out but I think there is an psychological advantage to using kilograms over pounds when checking your weight daily. Still, I acknowledge one should look at the numbers rationally, void of emotion.

If I was to start my diet over again the one thing I would have done is bought a Pedometer. I walk all the time and my pace is really improving. I am curious as to how far I walk, how fast and how much I have improved. I am a closet Luddite but I do regret not buying one of those little gadgets.

This brings me to the 250USD contest John is running at John is Fit Blog. To enter the only requirement is post the contest on your blog. You get bonus points if you offer a link to one of his product reviews. The product review I chose was his Pedometer Review. Go ahead and educate yourself and read more at John's Pedometer Review.

One last cool thing. Go see John's latest post here. A casting company contacted him looking for people with "love handles". You want to be famous? John has graciously provided a link to the casting company. Don't be self conscious - who cares if you are a bit fat. Think of the bragging rights!

Have a nice day.

While getting ready for work I was thinking about Jerry Hayes the 64 year old guy who was eliminated from the Biggest Loser Contest in the second week and insultingly called "weak" by Trainer Julian Michaels. He went home and lost 177 pounds in 5 months, came back to the show and won 100,000USD.

In the Political Correct school of Fitness Trainers, I doubt they encourage Personal Trainers to call Senior Citizens "Weak" after failing to keep up. I sincerely, doubt Michaels meant to be insulting. It might have been an off the cuff comment.

Hayes was bitter. He went home and worked hard. He lost 177lbs (80kg) in 5 months. Came back to the show and won 100,000USD. He had been brooding about Michaels' comment and planned to confront her. Seeing his opportunity he picked her up on stage, live in front of millions of viewers and suggested to her that he indeed - was not weak. What a guy. You can read about it here.

I learned 3 things from 64 year old cool grandpa, Mr. Hayes.

1) To laugh at people who push the myth that losing 1-2 pounds as week is the "only" safe way. It is safe. It is true for some but not true for all. Be healthy and let your body decide how much wieght to lose.

2) I really hate people commenting, questioning and pointing out my "girth" day in and day out. I find it very uncivilized. That said, I acknowledge, like Michaels "weak" comment, it can be a great motivator to lose weight.

3)In general, I suspect the older generation has thicker skin and is mentally tougher than my generation.

Have a nice day.

For about 1 month I have been following John is Fit Blog. You can read his "About" page here. This page is dated August 1st 2007. In the right column is a chart chronicling John's present progress. The chart clearly shows John is struggling. The reason I like "John is Fit" is John is an honest person. He is keeping it real and is not giving up.

Though I have great things to say about John I have to be upfront about my motivation for writing this post. John has a contest running that I hope lots of people enter. Whether I win the 250 dollars or you win the 250 dollars is not important. It is good to help an old hand who has been grinding it out for close to two years now. You can find the contest details here.

I am a bit older than John and by the looks of things, he has more hair (on his head). We are both on a diet with the same goal - lose weight. However our journeys are not the same nor should they be. But the goal posts are in the same place. We will both succeed.
