Day 3 Round 3 Calories
Once again I made all the right choices but I over ate and did not make an effort to count calories. I'm not sure if it still holds but Okinawa has the highest per capita of people living over the age of 100 in the world. The diet of all the elderly have one thing in common - low caloric intake.

The Hot 100 - Going Out With A Bang
Blogger, South Beach Steve at Log My Loss initiated a The Hot 100 contest- Going Out With a Bang. It is a very straight forward contest. As of today, there are 100 days left in the the year. Make some goals and update them every 10 days.
I have entered the contest. My two 100 day goals are,
1. Weigh 85kg at the end of the contest.
2. Don't drink any beer (alcohol) for 100 days.

Belated One Year Anniversary
I'm not sure how I let it pass. I started my weight loss journey September 20th 2008. One year of dieting just past. Down 60kg and up 24kg in one year and still trying.
I am not particularly good at Batto Jutsu, a Japanese sword art. My Sensei told me that I must think about it as a journey to the top of a mountain. There is no one path to the top. On the journey you must learn to choose between paths that matches your ability. Ability is not in your arms and legs but in your head.
After one year of dieting, blogging and reading I think I have come to a realization that to be successful at dieting one must choose a diet (path) that matches their personality.
I lost 60kg in Okinawa and gained 24 kg traveling in North America. I now realize you must choose a diet (life style) that matches your personality and your immediate environment.
Dieting is not static.

Day 2 Round 3 Calories
Once again I did not count my calories and over ate but on the good side all my choices of food were good - just way too much.
I have been home alone with my son for the last 4 days and I love every minute of it and Cherish the opportunity.
It plays havoc on my ability to focus on keeping the volume of food down. I know it is not an excuse just a hurdle.
In the future, I will have an appreciation for some of the difficulties a dieting stay-at-home-mom faces day in and day out.

Daily Review
I was reading about the Obamacare debate in the States. It was weird to read people on the Right demonizing Canada, my home country.
I will not share my political beliefs. But, I am writing about this for something happened as I read the stories of people who have gone without proper health care. I suspected some of their problems stemed from obesity.
I was reading and it came to me - I am a very lucky person. Though I have always been overweight the doctors say I am surprisingly, very healthy. I do have a partial knee replacement which restricts my exercise choices, but - I can still walk, swim, inline skate and practice Iaido. Most importantly, I can play with my son.
Yes, I am a lucky person.

Day 1 Round 3 Calories
Not sure of my Calories today. I was busy, Snacked too much. Ate salad but put on creamy dressing. Had two eggs instead of one. Put too much honey on my half litre of yogurt. Put too much peanut butter on my rice cakes. I will be glad when that jar is done. Thankfully my family does not eat the stuff so I won't be tempted. Next time my American friend asks if I want to go shopping on base - I will refuse and will suggest going inline skating along the sea wall.
But it was still a good day.

Round 2 Reveiw
I started round 2 and was doing okay for five days then drifted and "woke-up" ten days later at the same weight I started round 2.
While I lost this round - it is not that bad. Round 3 starts where I started Round 2 - 111kg. Most important - I am back.
My 2 goals for round 2 were; figure out where I went wrong and how I was able to gain 24 kg in two months and second, lose 26 kg in the next 3 months.
Round 3, I am not going to try and figure out where I went wrong. I am just going to do, what I already know how to do - follow the Okinawa diet and lose 26 kg in 3 months.
Figuring out where I went wrong, had a weird influence on my diet. I can't articulate it.
It is hard for me to do a positive (lose weight) and do a negative (focus on how I messed up) at the same time. My personality is not wired for it.
It does not mean I don't want to know how I messed up - I do. I just think this is not a prudent time to focus on that mistake. When I lose the next 26 kg I will try and figure how to maintain my weight. Then, and only then, will I try and figure out where I made my mistake(s).
I remember something an old coach told me - KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)
Thank you to all the people who read my blog. I know it has a positive impact on my goals.
Cheers

Reflections on my Wrong Turn
I know how I gained 24kg in 2 months. I ate too much. It is weird though. I worked so hard to lose 60 kg then I was able to simply "forget" all my effort. How does one forget?
I also "forget" to keep in touch with friends and loved ones. I'm terrible for that. I never forget to tell my son I love him but sometimes forget to tell my wife. I never forget to pay my mortgage but do forget to wash and service our vehicles but never my motorcycle.
Later today I am going to search the words "forget" and "focus" on the net. In my world, I suspect they are connected. To Forget - is like losing focus?

Day 4 Round 2 Review
It was a good day. Still eating too much but at least, eating too much of the right kind of food. Walked for 1.5 hours today. Looks like my neighbour is going to have a good banana crop soon. I love Okinawa.

Reflections on my Wrong Turn
I force myself to think about my wrong turn - gaining 26kgs in two months. Focusing on failure is not easy, but in my experience it is the only way to figure out how to avoid making the same mistake(s) a second or third time.
I am wondering if I made just one big mistake or a bunch of little mistakes that accumulated into a massive mistake.
If possible I would like to find the biggest mistake or the first mistake. That way I can avoid the avalanche of little mistakes.

Day 3 Round 2 - Review
It was a good day. While I am not counting calories I have been slowly cutting back on my intake and limiting my choices. No bread, rice or desserts. Lots of vegetables and fruits. Too much meat and cheese. My experience tells me to move slowly into a high focus diet.
I walked for 45 minutes today. I'm a bit busy now but will start to arrange my day in order to incorporate at least 2 hours a day.
Below are more goya from my father-in-laws garden. I believe grandpa's goya are better but we are happy for all the free vegetables given generously. I am preparing goya chanpuru.

Reflections on my Wrong Turn
Still can't figure out how I could have made such a blunder. It is almost like I slowly drifted off, fell asleep and woke up one morning, something in my head clicked. Oh Shit! What have I done?
I know how I gained weight. I ate too much, too much of the wrong type of food. That is easy to understand. It is difficulty to understand how I could lose focus.
I left Okinawa, went on the road and left my discipline behind. Came back and it took about 1.5 weeks to snap out of my haze. Madness.

Day 2 Round 2 - Review
It was a pretty good day. I'm still not counting calories. I did manage to go for two 45 minute walks. I have set a goal to be back eating the "Okinawan Way" in 1 week. Lower my calories, eat a lots of fruit vegetables from a variety of sources and daily activity.

Reflections on my Wrong Turn
As a result of a series of mistakes I gained 24kg in 2 months. That is an average of o.4kg (0.88lbs) a day. This is after losing 0.44kg a day for previous 90 days and 0.22 kg a day over the previous 9.5 months combined.
Clearly, I failed on my attempt to maintain a sane life while "on the road". I am not worried about losing the weight again. I can do it.
I worry, that away from my home and routine, I can't keep it together. I need to figure this out and thus born my new Reflections label.
Well my son is not happy and it's time to take him to daycare.

Day 1 Round 2 - Review
A tough start. Tried hard to limit my calories but struggled. I walked for 1 hour and felt great. I did gain 24 kg but my fitness is still strong. It is going to take a few days to get back into a routine. Here are some cool goya from my wife's grandfather's garden. I love the stuff.

Day 90 Review
It was a wonderful day. The weather was great.
I started my "All fruit Sunday" six weeks ago on a whim. I felt I was not eating enough fruit nor a wide enough variety. I figured, if I ate only fruit one day a week it would force me to include more fruit in my general diet. I think I succeeded.
I weighed in at 88kg this morning. I'm down 39kg and just two more weigh-ins to see if I can reach my goal of losing 42kg in 3 months. I am familiar with my current rate of weight loss, the trend, and cycles - it appears I will be short of my goal. I won't let that stop me from continuing to try.
It has been a great experience. I will continue to eat well but look forward to not exercising every day. In 3 months I never once took a day off and averaged just over 2 hours a day. Exercising has become a huge chore which I now dread. Just one more day.
I wrote this post just before I went for my evening walk. I finished my 1.5 hour walk and rested on a park bench just before I came home. I heard laughter from a couple. The lighting was poor. The couple was playing catch ball. The guy was fat. It was not that I noticed at first. I noticed he threw with his left hand which is unusual in Japan. His pitch was very "girl like" (sorry) but he also caught with his left hand and made some amazing catches. Next, they started to bat. He had the most awkward left hand hit. But, he connected every time and the ball went clear thought the little park. The ball landed close to me and I kept quiet. He was looking for thel ball and I noticed his right arm was gimp.
I now see "diet lessons" everywhere. Buddy is a big man. His throwing arm is a bit embarrassing but his catching and his hitting is amazing. He adapted. You want to pick a diet....pick a diet that matches your personality and ability.
Good Night.

Health Check = Longer life
The idegenous people of Okinawa tend to have one of the longest life expectancies of any group of people in the world. The Okinawa diet essentially reflects the general eating patterns of the Okinawan seniors.
In one study, Okinawan seniors were found to have 80% fewer cases of heart disease and 50% less cases of cancer than their American counterparts. There are more people over the age of 100 per 100,000 population than any place in the world.
The Okinawa diet is not a magic diet. There are no secrets. It is simply, a way of life. Researchers have been careful to note, it is not just about nutrition. Okinawans tend to be more physically active, doing what I call "just living". Like Islanders all over the world, Okinawans tend to be laid back and operate on a what is referred to as Unchina Time (Island Time). Okinawans tend to be fairly spiritual. Okinawan society is made up of many loosely defined social circles. Within the circle, people sincerely care and make an effort to support one another. Of course, all of this contributes to their well being.
Going through the mail I thought about one additional thing that contributes to the longevity of the Okinawans. The government makes a sincere effort to care for her citizens. Below is a request I received in the mail from my municipal government.

Essentially, it is a request to make an appointment to come for a yearly Cancer and Medical Health Check. On a computer in the Municipal Office I am on a data base organized by age. A ticket is sent out once a year to come for the appropriate age related health check. I choose Sunday afternoon for my health check. This Sunday my son will go for his health check. My son's health check and shots are all free. I believe I have to pay about 1000yen (10usd).
Last year I was too large to fit in the x-ray machine. It was an awkward moment for everyone. Possibly more awkward for the doctor and nurses, as they apologized profusely. I am looking forward to getting into the machine this year.
The purpose of the post is to point out the longevity of the Okinawan seniors, in a small way, is the result of a very caring government. They make a proactive attempt to provided health checks at almost zero costs to their citizens. Does your government, not only provide free, age appropriate health checks every year but take the effort to notify you by mail and allow you to come in on the weekend? It seems very civilized.
Have a nice day.
